Why Ubuntu Mate?

Do you have a preferred distribution for Linux?

I thought I would expand on my choice of Linux distribution. I have been a fan of Ubuntu Mate since Xenial Xerus release of 16.04. Having used it consistently since 2016, it has become to feel like home.

I find it is hard to pinpoint a single reason why I have stuck to this particular distribution. Perhaps it is a sub-conscience love for Chelsea Cucumber green. Realistically, it is the number of good choices made by the team behind the distribution. Sometimes it is the small things such as mapping Control+E to open caja out of the box. It is also the big things like including Flatpak in 22.04. (Yes, I know Canonical has done away with this configuration.) Additionally, the Ubuntu Mate team have put forth effort to ensure it is available for multiple hardware types. This has allowed me to run it on my Raspberry Pi and assorted hardware I have collected. Let’s also not forget the Yaru-MATE-dark theme is killer. Although, I am sure the other themes are just as good. Yaru-MATE-dark is my preferred theme. Finally, the hard working team behind the distribution ensure the quality is high which allows users to enjoy all that MATE goodness.

Will Ubuntu Mate work for you? It’s hard to say. If your workflow is similar to mine, then perhaps you will enjoy it. I always try to encourage people to utilize the distribution that works for them.

TLDR: Ubuntu Mate is my distribution of choice due to its preconfigured options, high quality, and ease of use.
